Apple & Oat Crisp


6 apples (I use 3 Granny Smith and 3 Golden Delicious) – peeled, cored, and sliced 1/4 inch thick

2 tablespoons granulated sugar

3/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Pinch of salt

Pinch of freshly grated nutmeg (optional)

1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice (optional)

For the Topping

1/2 cup packed light brown sugar

1/2 cup rolled oats

1/3 cup all-purpose flour

Pinch of salt

4 tablespoons cold unsalted butter (1/2 stick), cut into small pieces


Heat the oven to 350°F and arrange a rack in the middle.

Combine the apples, granulated sugar, cinnamon, and 1/8 teaspoon of the salt and lemon in a large bowl and toss to coat. Place apple mixture in the baking dish and set aside.

For the topping – mix together brown sugar, oats, flour, and salt until evenly combined. Using your hands, blend in the butter until it is well incorporated.

Sprinkle the topping evenly over the apples and bake until the topping is browned and the apples are tender about 50 to 60 minutes.

Best served warm with vanilla ice cream.
