Rice with Ground Beef and Almonds (Heshwi)

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon allspice
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper
  • 1 cup rice, rinsed
  • 1 3/4 cups chicken broth
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1/2 cup slivered almonds

  1. Brown beef in a large pot over medium/high heat.
  2. While the beef is browning, add all the spices.
  3. Once the beef is well browned, add the rice and sauté for 1-2 minutes.
  4. Add the broth and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat and simmer until the rice is tender and the liquid is absorbed, approximately 20 minutes.

For the almond topping:
Melt the butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add the almonds and cook, stirring constantly until the almonds and butter are browned.

Pour the rice onto a serving platter and top with the toasted almonds.
